To everyone who participated in the Big Impact running challenge last week, we would like to thank you for your support.  As lockdown continues we see an increase in hunger and desperation and feel we need to do more.

Our 13 VUSA coaches continue to support Langa schools to safely distribute food to our 400 beneficiaries.

Should you wish to get involved, please see the following ways to support:

As you know, the Covid-19 lockdown has left thousands of South Africans destitute. Our major focus over the next few weeks will be to ensure that VUSA children and others in the community receive food.

Our team in Langa is working with schools in the community to ensure feeding remains safe and social distancing is maintained at all times. Where possible, food will be delivered directly to children’s homes. For any families who are looking for a way to contribute to the Covid-19 relief, we are asking for soup donations. Please see a recipe below. If all families use similar ingredients, it will mean all soup can be decanted and transported to Langa.

Vegetable Soup Recipe (Kindly use variations of these ingredients and please don’t blend so that it doesn’t spoil if mixed in the container)

2-3 cloves garlic, minced

½ head of cabbage, chopped

1 cup celery stalks, diced

pumpkin or potatoes

1 cup onion,

1 cup carrots, diced

Herbs

Salt and pepper

4 cups chicken stock

400g garlic diced tomatoes / fresh tomatoes

Alternatively we appeal for loaves of bread or any staple ingredients, that can be delivered to destitute families. We also require additional masks and sanitiser to ensure feeding remains safe.

3. ONE MAN’S JUNK IS ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE

Many of us have taken this lock-down as an opportunity to sort through cupboards.

If you have cleared out winter clothes, sporting equipment, kids games or any other household items which you no longer require, please consider donating these to VUSA.  We will collect after lockdown or items can be delivered to Bishops Prep or College reception once schools reopen.

As a community organisation we try to support the whole Langa community even though our focus is children and we will find a good home for clothes of any size.
